The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is warning the public about a cross-Canada telephone scam involving fraudsters impersonating police officers in Labrador West.
The RNC says it has received multiple reports from individuals living outside Newfoundland and Labrador who received calls from 709-944-3405, a number formerly associated with the Officer in Charge of the Labrador City Detachment.
During the calls, the individual on the other end claims that police have someone in custody before providing instructions in an attempt to obtain further information from the recipient. The RNC is reminding the public to end any conversation with someone claiming to be law enforcement who is attempting to obtain personal or financial information. Residents are encouraged to contact their local police service directly to verify the legitimacy of any such call.
Police also stress that law enforcement agencies and public officials will never demand money over the phone as part of a judicial or investigative process.
The RNC warns that fraudsters can use technology to disguise their actual phone numbers, meaning a call should not be trusted simply because the number appears local or familiar.
Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity can contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. Fraudulent or scam calls can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
